Wednesday December 9, 2015 – The LA Bioscience Mixer at USC Keck School of Medicine hosted by the LA Bioscience Hub in collaboration with the Biotech Connection of LA was a tremendous success the day after winning the LA2050 Goldhirsch Foundation Grant. SyncFab delivered the featured presentation. For the past 5 years Southern California has cheered the emergence of Silicon Beach startup culture to match Silicon Valley. BioTech Beach has quietly been ramping in the background with the possibility of faster growth in 2016 to exceed Silicon Beach.

Though SyncFab focuses greatly on industrial and consumer products including medical devices, the SyncFab platform being inspired by maker movement enabling technologies was designed to accommodate design innovation collaboration across industries impacted by 3d printing so that it includes an Academic Bio-Printing Collaboration platform.

Fitting nicely into the theme of BioTech Beach and Advanced Manufacturing are BioPrinting and DNA Printing where California leads. California is the US capital of Manufacturing and Biosciences in terms of employment (58% in Medical Devices) and output with a $130BN (2014) state bioscience industry receiving the largest share of national Venture Capital funding $37BN (2014) and NIH Grants.

Medical Device Technology – a very important part of the Bioscience Ecosystem – is trending which will continue in 2016. 31% of Google Ventures Investment Portfolio consisted of Biosciences in 2015 followed by 24% Consumer and 23% Enterprise with a higher investment rate due to years of development. Airing CPAP Raised $1M on IndieGoGo with 10,000 Donors receive maskless, cordless, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device to treat obstructive sleep apnea. Scanadu raised $46M in a Series B following a $1.6M IndieGoGo Campaign for their Scout BioSensor.

The success of several key medical device manufacturers with strong roots in the region has fostered growth of the local industry over the years. A strong support system of suppliers, academic institutions, and investors has cropped up, further securing our status as a leading medtech cluster. California is home to a Rich existing Biomedical Ecosystem albeit fragmented, much of it offline and sometimes difficult to navigate. Bioscience Mixer attendees learned first hand how to use the SyncFab platform to take full advantage of the local ecosystem to accelerate development for their medical device, medtech and bioprinting ventures. Thank You to the LA Bioscience Hub for inviting SyncFab to present and Thank You to the Partnership Mixer participants: USC Keck School of Medicine and the LA Biotech Connection. Thank you also to all of the mixer attendees for your great questions and valuable presence!
